Abstract Social Studies is a subject taught in all Upper Basic (Primary) schools in Nigeria. The sole purpose is to inculcate norms and moral values into the young citizens and expose them to the happenings in the world around them. Unfortunately, from observation, a significant number of Social Studies teachers do not appear to possess the needed level of competence to effectively teach the subject. In addition there is evidence of a high rate of moral decadence in the schools and society coupled with pupil’s poor performance in Social Studies in recent examinations. It is against this backdrop that this study investigated the effect of drama method of instruction on primary school pupils’ interest and achievement in Social Studies in public primary schools in Delta State. The pre-test post-test non-equivalent control group quasi-experimental design was adopted in the society. The study’s sample consisted of 172 Primary four pupils in two intact classes. Two research instruments: the Social Studies Achievement Test (SSAT) and the Social Studies Interest Questionnaire (SSIQ) developed by the researchers were used for data collection. The data were analysed using paired sample t-test, independent sample t-test and One-way as well as Two-way Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA).The results showed that there were significant differences in achievement and interest towards Social Studies between pupils exposed to the drama method of instruction and those exposed to the conventional lecture method of instruction. In addition, there were significant improvements in the post-test achievement and interest scores of pupils exposed to the drama method of instruction among others. The study concluded that drama method of instruction is an effective method of teaching Social Studies. The researchers recommend that the drama method of instruction be adopted by Social Studies teachers particularly in the primary school level of education.

Abstract Education practice involves the bringing together of all types of learners whether with or without any form of disabilities or challenge, in the same school or classrooms where adequate infrastructure and facilities are provided to support learning. This makes inclusive education the basis for an inclusive society. Sadly, it is still erroneously thought in some countries especially in Sub-Saharan African nations like Nigeria, that inclusive education is a school model that is designed to serve only children with some disabilities within the purview of the general education. This is probably the reason our current national policy on education (NPE, 2013) still have a section for special education even after it has previously enshrined inclusiveness in the Section I of the extant document. This may have been an afterthought. This paper examines inclusive education practices the current trend of education practice that Nigeria should urgently begin to implement. It suggests comprehensive review of the NPE and the need for Nigeria to make the use of sign language as a second language of communication at all social levels as already being practice in other climes, as a critical way forward to serve as basis for embracing inclusive education practices in our the Nigerian school systems.
