Abstract It is a well-known fact that teachers are the cornerstone is any educational programme. No matter how well education policies are formulated planned and funded, without professionally qualified, dedicated and highly motivated teachers to execute the plan, the aims and objectives of that programme will fail woefully. It is very disheartening to see the teachers in the institutions of learning being treated with levity, contempt, abandonment and in fact as second class citizens. This seriously affects the standard of teaching and learning in the school and greatly threatens the very existence of education in the country. This paper examines the need for motivating the teachers and also suggests various ways of motivating in order to avert an imminent and total collapse of education in the country.

Abstract This study is aimed at the effect of Mass Media on religious education of students in secondary schools. Four hundred (400) secondary school students were randomly selected from four (4) secondary schools in Nigeria. The survey research design was used in carrying out this study. The populations consist of all Christian Religions Studies (CRS) students in Junior and Senior Secondary Levels in selected Local Government Areas in Nigeria. A questionnaire was used in collecting data and a simple frequency count and percentages statistical technique was used in analyzing the data. The findings of the study revealed the following: That there was no type of Mass Media employed in religious instruction; that the religious programmes in Mass Media should not be employed in teaching Christian religious studies; that religious programmes in the Mass Media are not related to the curricular expectations of religious education in secondary school, that the timing of presentation of religious programmes did not fit into the religious education programmes of learners and that the presentation of religious programmes in the Mass Media does not agree with religious education teaching in secondary schools. A glance at the result will show that there is no relationship between the programmes in the mass media and that of the school Christian Religious Studies (CRS) period. Government, school heads, parents, teachers and Guidance should engage in making Christian Religious Studies (CRS) compulsory not only in the junior secondary but also in the senior secondary to help students have interest in religious education programmes. Abstract There is no doubt that modern life is dominated by technology. Although it has been rightly said that what is wrong with education cannot be fixed with technology, there is a universal recognition of the need to use Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education as we enter the era of globalization where the free flow of information via satellite and the internet hold sway in the dissemination of knowledge and information. Already, Nigeria is on the wrong side of the international digital divide, as it has not made significant effort to integrate ICT into secondary school curriculum. A great deal of instructional and administrative work in secondary school in Nigeria is still carried out manually. This paper, therefore, examines the major obstacles militating against the use of ICT in secondary education in Nigeria. It identifies the high cost of computer hardware and software, weak infrastructure, lack of human skills and knowledge in ICT, and lack of relevant software appropriate and culturally suitable to Nigeria as the major stumbling block of the adoption of ICT in secondary education in Nigeria. Also, secondary schools in Nigeria are not given adequate funds to provide furniture, relevant textbooks and adequate classroom let alone being given adequate fund for high-tech equipment. At present the cost of subscribing to the Internet is too high for many of the impoverished secondary schools in Nigeria. Nigeria needs ICT to aid teaching, learning and educational management. ICT is an instrument for economic and technological development in the 21st century. Therefore, Nigeria cannot afford to be on the wrong side of the digital divide.

Abstract Women Constitute on indispensible force in the quest for National development of any nation especially in the developed nations. However in Nigeria, women are still relegated to the background as they lack the educational, economic and political power necessary to actualize their innate potentials. Curriculum Innovation for women empowerment can be described as the provision of adequate opportunities to women to develop their potentials and contribute to the development of the nation in particular and the world in general. The word innovation carries with its ideas of newness. Curriculum innovation is the process of introducing new content and learning experiences into an educational system. The introduction of population and family life education and HIV/AIDS were novel to the Nigerian education system in the late 1980s and 1990s. Similarly the introduction of security education in the Nine (9)-year basic education curriculum is an innovation for increased women participation in national development. It has. been observed that since creation women have been disempowered. Efforts made so far towards women empowerment has yielded little fruits. The paper attempted to re-emphasize and re- awaken the mind of humanity on the undisputable role of women in national development, challenges hindering Nigeria women's effective contribution to national development, different roles of women in national development and various efforts made towards women empowerment to enable them contribute their quota to national development. Furthermore the paper postulates that Government and other stake holders need to take more pro-active actions to ensure gender parity in education through special girls child education, scholarship, effective implementation of policies and programme and removal of those artificial and institutional barriers based on religion, culture or traditional considerations which have incapacitated Nigerian women in participating effectively and freely in National affairs especially at the political and economic levels.

Abstract Most recently, child abuse has increased considerably in all communities especially in Nigeria. The exact incidence of child abuse in the country may not be known because there is no former system of reporting cases of child abuse and most of the cases never get to the attention of the authorities concerned. This paper therefore examined the causes, types of child abuse, effect and the role of curriculum studies teachers in curbing this social ill in the Nigerian society. Some of the causes of child abuse are poverty, separation or divorce, high cost of education which prevents some parents from sending their children to school and so on. The paper also proffers solutions to this contemporary problem. For example governments should be alive to their responsibilities particularly to children in terms of provision of free and qualitative education, good health facilities, prevention of any form of maltreatment and other forms of indiscriminate use of a child. Parents and guardians must discharge their duties loyally and diligently.

Abstract Basic education has been defined by a range of organization with each definition revolving around core themes. Each of the definitions of basic education shares common elements. These include the development of competencies, knowledge, attitudes and values as a basis for lifelong learning. On the other hand, readiness to learn occurs when a child has achieved cumulative learning of component sub- skills, and the developmental maturity necessary to integrate these sub-skills into the desired skill. Readiness is relative, however, not only to the skill, but also to the technique of instruction. This paper makes a relationship between basic education and readiness in learning and how learning readiness is a prerequisite condition for the effective learning process among school children. It further shows how learning readiness determine the provisions of basic education and how learning readiness affects the educational achievement of students and pupils at the various levels of the educational process. Finally, it is believed from this study that program-based and system wide support for basic education reforms which also leads to greater participation of learners in the teaching process could result in more transformative change in our educational system.

Abstract Education is a cooperative teaching/ learning process of preparing an individual from birth and throughout life. Education is a process of skill acquisition, knowledge and understanding. It is a process of cultural transfer or mutation into society. For a child or learner to acquire these, teaching is involved. Methods are instructional techniques, strategies or styles the teacher employs to teach the learner to bring about effective teaching and learning. It is important to note that using one method exclusively without interfering with others is difficult. The problem remains that some people who did not go through these teacher training courses teach at all levels of education (Primary, Secondary and Tertiary). Such teachers are quacks who cheat rather than teach. The quacks do much damage to the learners. A teacher who knows the subject matter but cannot impart such knowledge to the students is useless in the system. This paper, therefore, emphasizes the following: The concept of teaching, the concept of learning, the idea of methodology, and various methods of teaching, including the roles of the religious education teacher. The paper concluded by recommending that government should organize seminars/workshops on different methodologies in teaching and learning in schools. The ministries of education, both state and federal, should ensure that only professionally qualified and registered teachers are employed to teach in schools; Government should provide opportunities for advancement for both teachers and learners.

Abstract Women are vital to the development of a nation. No country can aspire to achieve its full development potentials without full participation of gender equality. The issues of women empowerment and the rights of women has become a subject of debate in public among scholars and international campaigners. The traditional and cultural definition of women in relation to men dominated society led to the gross under- development of women not to participate in any social, economic and political matters.
